Are CBD Products Safe For My Pet?

We’ve all heard of CBD, the shortened name for Cannabidiol, and the benefits that it can have on our physical well-being. It’s a better pain reliever for people who prefer to ditch prescription pain killers and for those who don’t want to feel the high they get from ingesting marijuana, which is the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. This is why so many people prefer CBD over THC; People can use CBD and still be able to function for everyday life while the CBD goes to work on the body.

CBD has become such a great alternative to prescription drugs for people living with pain, anxiety, depression, and more. It can even be used to treat children with certain epilepsy syndromes that do not respond to antiseizure medications. So if we use CBD to treat ailments for yourselves and children, why wouldn’t it work on our beloved pets?

Every since the kickstart of marijuana legalization in certain states in 2012, people have been learning more and more about CBD, which often led pet owners to beg the question, “If it’s not going to affect the brain and will relieve pain and other ailments, can I give it to my dog for their arthritic hips? Can I give it to my cat for anxiety?”

The short answer to these questions is, yes, it is safe to use on dogs and cats for these conditions, but it’s a little more complicated than that. Mostly due to the fact that there is little research done on how CBD affects an animal’s body. In this blog, we will go through what research has been done, and what questions we might need to be answered before we start feeding CBD treats to our treasured fur babies.

How Does CBD Affect The Human Body?

In order to understand how CBD is going to affect an animal’s body, we must first understand how it impacts our human bodies. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a part of the cannabinoid family and stimulates the endocannabinoid system in our bodies to put our bodies in a state of homeostasis, which can reduce pain.

Although CBD does not cause us to feel that “high” that is felt when we consume THC, it still affects the brain, but in a slightly different way. Rather than feeling intoxicated, CBD has certainly shown evidence of being a mood-altering substance, having moderate effects on anxiety, depression, pain, appetite, and sometimes even seizures. Evidence has also shown that it is metabolized through the liver. Research on CBD’s longterm effects on people is still ongoing, but professionals have found that the risk of becoming addicted or dependant on CBD products is little to none.

What Will CBD Do For My Pets?

CBD for pets can come in different forms, but for the most part, they’re pretty similar to how we consume CBD with a few variations. Animals will take CBD tablets in the form of treats (which sometimes come in a gummy form), oils that can be added to their food or squirted under the tongue, and topical creams to rub on the skin, all of which are typically how people consume CBD. And just like with humans, each method of consumption has different effects.

Truth be told, there isn’t a lot of evidence that shows how CBD affects dogs, as research for its full effects on humans is still unclear. The research done on cats is even less, and although the effects displayed so far seem to be beneficial, what we know for sure is still a bit unclear.

Dogs

Dogs have been the primary study group (other than humans, of course) on how CBD affects animals, mostly as a result of so many dog owners begging the question of CBD’s effects on their pooch. What is clear about CBD’s impact on a dog’s body is that, like humans, dogs have an endocannabinoid system, and they also metabolize through their liver. It has also been shown to relieve pain and increase activity with dogs who have osteoarthritis and have reduced seizures experienced by epileptic dogs. Other medications that help with these issues often cause animals to gain weight and become lethargic, so if CBD can fix the problem without having harmful side effects, it would be a win-win for your pooch.

Each animal is different, but with the knowledge that CBD is metabolized through the liver, it would be best to avoid CBD for now if you know your animal has liver issues. Since research on the effects of CBD on animals is still ongoing, the best thing you could do as a responsible owner is to consult your veterinarian before you make any CBD purchases for your dog.

Cats

The unfortunate truth about the research regarding how CBD affects dogs is that there has not been a lot of research done on cats, which leaves cat owners and lovers in the dark with a lot of unanswered questions.

However, from what little research there is on CBD’s effects on cats, we can draw from the research done on healthy dogs and apply it to our feline friends. The best thing you can look out for your kitty is the dosage that they receive. As long as you pay attention to how much you give to them, the benefits for dogs and cats are actually pretty similar.

Essentially, there has been no evidence found showing anything dangerous about giving CBD to pets, but it’s important to keep in mind that we still know very little about it, so at this point, it’s best to proceed with caution. Obviously, each and every pet is different, whether they are a different species, a different breed, different size, and all need different care that is crafted especially for them. When it comes to choosing a CBD product for your animal, all of these factors are very important to consider. The first step before making a purchase would be to consult your veterinarian to see if CBD is the right solution for your pet.
