What Are Cannabinoids?

With the rise of popularity associated with CBD oil, there’s a new buzzword circulating from blog to blog and all over Cheech and Chong’s Facebook page: Cannabinoids. Unfortunately, popular culture has created quite the stigma around any word that sounds vaguely similar to “cannabis.” Rather than bothering to define the word, people use it as an overarching term for anything that looks like a marijuana leaf and looks like it goes in a bong or a joint. Thus, “cannabinoids” which are generally associated with CBD oil has a bad rap and quite a bit of mystery surrounding it. In reality, it’s much more innocent than the “Just Say No” campaigns would have you believe.

The Basics

Did you know your body creates cannabinoids on its own? They’re little fatty compounds that are found in the hemp plant as well as other plants, and it’s already produced in the human body, naturally. The ones in your body are called endocannabinoids and those found in plants are called phytocannabinoids. They’re the primary compound produced by hemp cannabis plants and when they’re in the human body, they play key roles in controlling normal immune system functions as well as nervous system functions as well. Plus, there are a variety of cannabinoids and hemp is the highly valued producer of the fatty compound because it produces such a selection of them. In fact, the hemp plant itself creates more than 80 different cannabinoids and of these phytocannabinoids, they’re all non-psychoactive. Cannabidiol (also known as CBD) is merely the most well-known phytocannabinoid that’s created. The others include cannabigerol and cannabichromene among others. Those other compounds are used to reduce intraocular pressure on your eyes, provide neuroprotective effects and they have a similar anti-inflammatory effect to CBD oil itself.

Cannabinoids In Your Body

Over the last 20 years, scientists have conducted a variety of studies on cannabinoids and they’ve concluded your brain has two different kinds of receptors for cannabinoids. When a cannabinoid is picked up by a receptor the cell changes and reacts. These receptors for cannabinoids are found in the portion of the human brain that mainly handles cognition, memory, psychomotor skills as well as feelings of rewards and the pain perception. For this reason, many people report feeling less anxious and reduced symptoms of chronic pain when on a CBD oil regimen. Cannabinoids are seen to have stronger effects when used in combinations, hence the need to take CBD on a regular basis that’s mixed with a variety of other cannabinoids so that you can benefit from the various plant compounds like the terpenes, flavonoids and other valuable hemp contents that support the body and promote wellness.

The Reports

When folks start up CBD oil regimens they’re often skeptical until the effects kick in. After staying diligent on the regimen for a bit, users report a sense of calm and serenity as well as increased focus. They also report relief from stresses and reduction of exercise-induced inflammation. They even claim to no longer need sleep aids because of a more reliable sleep schedule is soon established after the beginning of the usage. It’s merely a way of accessing the majority of Mother Nature’s goodness all from one tincture bottle, or pain relief salve.

Why It Works

Endocannabinoid receptors are the most abundant neuromodulatory receptor in the human body, which means if your brain is picking up what you’re putting in, it’s probably picking up the cannabinoids. There are even more cannabinoid receptors than there are neurotransmitters for serotonin and dopamine, the natural happy juice your brain creates to keep you on the up and up. Because there are so many, it brings balance to the body. Scientists have observed changes in the ECS (endocannabinoid system) when the body is suffering from various diseases. Cancer, neurodegenerative disorders and rheumatoid arthritis all show changes in the endocannabinoid levels and the brain receptor expression. In fact, the biggest effect of the endocannabinoid system is the chance to catch the cannabinoid your body releases during exercise, the anandamide chemical that is the major feel-good chemical you get from exercise. Without your ECS, you wouldn’t be able to feel that benefit of physical activity.  Additionally, everyone’s favorite fatty acid, omega 3, is picked up by your ECS as well which is linked to increased brain matter production in your brain and actual increases in intelligence on an evolutionary level and individual level.
